How is marriage registered in Iraq?
Marriage contracts are registered at the personal status court. A marriage concluded by a cleric outside the court needs later ratification in court so the wife's rights are protected and children can be registered.
An Iraqi contract usually sets a prompt mahr (muqaddam) and a deferred mahr (mu'akhkhar), which the families discuss after the introduction. Zawjni does not conclude marriages or take part in the agreement.
